Effects of Prostaglandin E2 and D2 on cell proliferation and osteogenic capacity of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that affects and destroys the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. Early manifestations of the disease are characterized by the formation of gingival pockets, followed by periodontal attachment loss and resorption of the alveolar bone, leading ultimately to tooth loss [1]. According to recent epidemiologic surveys, the overall prevalence of this entity still remains high; for example more than 40% of the adult population in the United States suffers from periodontitis, and worldwide almost 10% of adults present with an advanced stage of this disease [2,3].
