Fasting Before Duplex Ultrasound Scan of Abdominal Aorta Is Unnecessary: Comparison of the Results of a Pilot Randomized Blind Study and a Retrospective Cohort

It is a common practice to require the patient to fast before duplex ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta. However, there is no high-level evidence that such practice results in better accuracy or enhances image quality. The fasting requirement may lead to delay of the testing, decreases vascular laboratory efficiency, and negatively affects patient satisfaction. The aim of this study was to assess necessity and feasibility of a randomized controlled study of the effect of fasting on the quality of duplex ultrasound of abdominal aorta.
