Long ‐Term Outcome of Islet Transplantation on Insulin‐Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM): An Observational Cohort Study

AbstractAimsTo investigate the long ‐term efficacy and safety of Islet transplantation (ITx) compared to multiple daily injections (MDI) or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII).MethodsAmong 619 patients diagnosed as insulin ‐dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or type 1 diabetes in our hospital, seven patients were selected as the ITx group and 26 age‐matched patients with no endogenous insulin secretion were selected as the MDI/CSII group. HbA1c, AST/ALT and creatinine were assessed retrospectively at 1, 2, 5 and 1 0 years for both groups; serum C‐peptide immunoreactivity (CPR) was assessed for the ITx group. This study aims at the fabrication and evaluation of alginate-chitosan microcapsules encapsulating insulin-secreting beta-TC-6 cells using an automated spraying nozzle. This study evaluates the biological effect of the macroencapsulation deviceś surface properties (hydrophilicity and porosity). We studied two different pore sizes and hydrophilicities in four different devices containing rat INS1E β-cells embedded in alginate hydrogels.
