Five nursing and midwifery specialists were inducted as scholars at this year’s prestigious Mary Seacole awards today (Thursday 24 October) at a ceremony at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. UNISON co-sponsors the awards, which offer an opportunity for healthcare workers to undertake a project, educational or development activity that benefits and improves the health of people from BME communities. Recipients have been working on their projects for the past year, funded by Health Education England, and today is the culmination of all their hard work. The awards are in memory of Mary Seacole, the Jamaican Scottish ...

In this study we tested the potential of the assay for standardisation and use in multiple testing laboratories. The assay was standardised and reproducibility determined using samples from healthy volunteers assayed concurrently in three laboratories in Leicester (UK), Mannheim (Germany) and Montpellier (France). RILA assays were performed on samples taken prior to radiotherapy from 1319 cancer patients enrolled in the REQUITE project at multiple centres. The patients were being treated for breast (n = 753), prostate (n = 506) or lung (n = 60) cancer. Inter-laboratory comparisons identified several factors aff...

AbstractObjectivesAndrogen deprivation therapy (ADT) use in prostate cancer (PCa) patients has been reported to have an association with rheumatoid arthritis. We aimed to assess the impact of ADT on the subsequent risk of tenosynovitis.MethodsUsing data from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan between 2001 and 2013, 3309 patients with PCa were identified. Among them, 729 ADT patients comprised the study group with 729 matched non-ADT controls. We used a 1:1 propensity score matched analysis. The demographic characteristics and comorbidities of the patients were analyzed; Cox proportional hazards regre...

In this study, we evaluated the effect of auranofin on the radiosensitivity of intestinal epithelial cells. The treatment with a combination of 1 μM auranofin and 5 Gy ionizing radiation showed clear additive effects on caspase 3 cleavage and apoptotic DNA fragmentation in IEC-6 cells, and auranofin administration significantly aggravated the radiation-induced intestinal injury in mice. Auranofin treatment also resulted in the activation of the unfolded protein response and in the inhibition of thioredoxin reductase, which is a key component of the cellular antioxidant system. Pre-treatment with N-acetyl cysteine, a wel...

In this study we adopted an all-in-one method. Primers designed according to the two gRNA sequences and the tracRNA-U6 vector sequences were used to produce a gRNA1-tracRNA-U6-gRNA2 fragment. Then the proper fragment was ligated into the lentiCRISPRv2 vector and verified by sequencing. Lentiviral Packaging and Stable Cell Line Screening The constructed eukaryotic expression vector and gene knockdown vector were transfected into the 293T cells with the packaging plasmids psPAX2 and pMD2.G using Lipofectamine 2000 (Thermo Fisher, Massachusetts, USA). The lentivirus was harvested 48 h after transfection, and the lentivirus ...

Conclusions and Perspectives In this review, we have discussed important milestones from the early description of “Serum-sickness” as being due to antibodies directed against Neu5Gc epitopes all the way to the present-day therapeutic implications of these antibodies in cancer therapy. Some of these milestones have been represented in a concise timeline (Figure 6). While the “Xenosialitis” hypothesis is well-supported in the human-like mouse models, it has yet to be conclusively proven in humans. It remains to be seen if “Xenosialitis” plays a role in other uniquely-human diseases. FI...
