Photobiomodulation rescues cognitive flexibility in early stressed subjects.

In this study, we performed maternal separation (10 days, 4 hours per day) in rats, and in adulthood, we tested their spatial navigation and cognitive flexibility. In addition, we delivered photobiomodulation treatment (Low-level light therapy: 1064nm, 30mW, 60 cycles) on the rats' brains, and we tested energy oxidative metabolism using cytochrome c oxidase histochemistry. Early life stress delivered in the form of maternal separation on the first 10 postnatal days leads to cognitive flexibility impairment and a general increase in energy metabolism in adulthood. Low-level light therapy seems to be useful for treating these unwanted outcomes, because it rescued cognitive flexibility and returned the oxidative energy metabolism to balanced scores, without harming controls' brains or behavior. Photobiomodulation is a promising tool in the treatment of chronic stress-related consequences because it rescued cognitive flexibility. PMID: 31226326 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Wessolowski N, Barkmann C, Stuhrmann LY, Schulte-Markwort M Abstract Effect of light therapy on the night sleep of children with sleep problems Abstract. Studies on the effect of light therapy on the nighttime sleep of adolescents revealed earlier sleep onset and longer sleep periods. The present study examines the corresponding effects in children. A group of 28 children (M = 10.0; SD = 1.65 years) with difficulties falling asleep and sleeping through the night received a light therapy device for home application. The effect was investigated by an A-B-A-B design with four measurement points. We detected s...

HamblinAbstractLight irradiation has been used in clinical therapy for several decades. In this context, photobiomodulation (PBM) modulates signaling pathways via ROS, ATP, Ca2+, while photodynamic therapy (PDT) generates reactive oxygen species by excitation of a photosensitizer. NO generation could be an important tool when combined with both kinds of light therapy. By using a metal-based compound, we found that PBM comb...
