Sa1062 CLINICAL AND COST EFFECTIVENESS OF THE NURSE PRACTITIONER ENDOSCOPIST IN ONE AUSTRALIAN HOSPITAL

There is increased demand for endoscopies largely driven by the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program impacting positively to reduce colorectal cancers. However, with a largely uninsured population, this additionally burdens the already bulging waiting lists within publicly provided endoscopy services. Nurse endoscopy is one tool utilised to address demand in the UK, Netherlands, USA, and now in Australia and NZ. Questions surround beyond the key performance indicators for colonoscopies quality metrics, with consideration needing to be applied to other performance metrics such as repeating procedures for interventional therapies, additional clinician involvement to manage complex cases, and potential differences in practice between medical endoscopists and nurse endoscopists.
