Stress cardiomyopathy: Thinking outside the octopus pot

“Takotsubo syndrome” or stress cardiomyopathy (SC) was first reported by Japanese authors in 1991[1]. As we all know by now, the apical variant was aptly coined “Takotsubo” due to its’ resemblance to the ceramic pots used by Japanese fishermen to trap octopuses. SC most commonly occurs in post-menopausal women who have been exposed to a triggering event such as acute physical or emotional distress [2].
