Veiga, Octavio Garate, Gabriel YbarraAbstractIron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and subjected to an adsorption and functionalization process at controlled pH with five different small carboxylate ligands, namely: citrate, tartrate, gluconate, succinate and β-alanine. The efficiency of the functionalization was evaluated by infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric measurements, finding that the presence of hydroxyl groups in ...

ABSTRACT Kinetic studies of sulfentrazone herbicide dechlorination by Fe/Ni nanoparticles were performed in the presence of different electrolytes such as: Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, Cu2+, Na+ and Zn2+. In the presence of Cl- and SO42- the reaction occurred efficiently, reaching approximately 100% of dechlorination after 30 minutes of reaction. In the presence of NO3- and Cu2+ ions the sulfentrazone dechlorination was significantly inhibited, because these ions tend to compete with the substrate for the electrons donated by Fe0. In the presence of Na+ ions, the dechlorination efficiency remained approximately 100%, however, this el...

ABSTRACT Duguetia furfuracea (Annonaceae) is a shrub found in the Brazilian Cerrado that is used in popular medicine as an antirheumatic, for wound healing, treatment of kidney pain and against pediculosis. The aim of this study was to analyze the extraction of leaves of Duguetia furfuracea, using supercritical CO2, ethanol and hexane as solvents. For the supercritical extraction, an experimental planning 23 with triplicates of the central point was used to evaluate the effects of temperature (313-333 K), pressure (15-23 MPa) and volumetric flow rate (3-6 mL min-1) on the extraction yield, total phenolic content and antiox...

BACKGROUND: Complex anal fistula is one of the challenging anorectal conditions. Several treatments have been proposed for complex anal fistula, yet none proved to be ideal. OBJECTIVE: This randomized trial aimed to assess the efficacy of external anal sphincter–sparing seton in comparison with the conventional drainage seton in the treatment of complex anal fistula. DESIGN: This was a prospective, randomized, single-blind controlled study. SETTINGS: The study was conducted at the Colorectal Surgery Unit of Mansoura University Hospitals. PATIENTS: Adult patients of both sexes with complex anal fistula w...

BACKGROUND: Transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization with mucopexy and vessel-sealing device hemorrhoidectomy seem to reduce postoperative pain compared with classic excisional hemorrhoidectomy, but whether one of them is superior remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We compared transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization with mucopexy and vessel-sealing device hemorrhoidectomy. DESIGN: This was a multicenter, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: The study was conducted at 6 Spanish centers. PATIENTS: Patients aged ≥18 years with grade III to IV hemorrhoids were included. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomly assi...

Iqbal, Anella Saviano, Paola Minosi, Marialuisa Piccolo, Carlo Irace, Francesco Caso, Raffaele Scarpa, Stefano Pieretti, Nicola Mascolo, Francesco MaioneAbstractGout is a paradigm of acute, self-limiting inflammation caused by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals within intra-and/or peri-articular areas, which leads to excruciating pain, joint swelling and stiffness. The infiltration of leukocytes drives the inflammatory response and remains an attractive target for therapeutic intervention. In th...
