Purpose of review In recent years, there have been several cardiovascular outcomes trials (CVOT) of two new classes of glucose-lowering medications: sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2-i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA). It is important examine their potential for cardiovascular benefit and possible side effects among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) mellitus. Recent findings The current article reviews the findings of recent CVOT of SGLT2-i and GLP-1 RA, including their impact on cardiovascular events and relevant side effects. Summary For all T2D patients, with or wi...

In conclusion, AF seems to have a higher prevalence in the general population than previously thought, and is mostly associa ted with hypertension, cardiomyopathy and rheumatic heart disease in SSA. It is associated with a high incidence of heart failure and stroke. The management of AF is suboptimal in SSA, especially with a low uptake of oral anticoagulation. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

The objective is a data-driven approach to set the preclinical and clinical study record straight. The convincing recent clinical trial data on the lack of significant toxicity in high risk populations justify the timely conduction of clinical studies in order to achieve "repurposing" or "repositioning" of pioglitazone for the treatment of clinical PAH. Abstract: Despite considerable progress in the field of heart failure about drugs and device therapy, the mortality rate of patients with heart failure remains high. Studies have shown that thromboembolism and stroke are associated with high mortality in patients with heart failure. Although warfarin therapy reduces the rate of ischemic stroke in patients with heart failure, the overall benefit from warfarin in this population seems to be offset by the increased bleeding risk. Thus, whether patients with chronic heart failure might benefit from anticoagulation, especially in patients with sinus rhythm, is still controver...

ConclusionsThe key determinants of the Bleeding Ratio among anticoagulated AF patients are age, prior thromboembolic and bleeding episodes. The study could support identification of AF patients who need additional effort to increase their acceptance of a life-long OAC therapy.

ConclusionControls need to be brought in to ensure that PM2.5 does not exceed a 50μg/m3 level due to the increase in disease incidence associated with same. The urban burning of solid fuels should be severely restricted.

In this study, researchers studied 438,952 participants in the UK Biobank, who had a total of 24,980 major coronary events - defined as the first occurrence of non-fatal heart attack, ischaemic stroke, or death due to coronary heart disease. They used an approach called Mendelian randomisation, which uses naturally occurring genetic differences to randomly divide the participants into groups, mimicking the effects of running a clinical trial. People with genes associated with lower blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol, and a combination of both were put into different groups, and compared against those without thes...

ConclusionThe findings of this first study to evaluate the mediating role of NSAIDs in the relationship between OA and CVD suggest that NSAID use contributes substantially to the OA –CVD association.

Conclusions: Neither LVADs nor IABP improves short or long-term survival in hr-PCI patients. LVADs are more likely to reduce repeat revascularization after PCI, but to increase the risk of bleeding events than IABP.
