In situ preparation of bacterial cellulose with antimicrobial properties from bioconversion of mulberry leaves

In this thesis, we introduce a new technique to functionalize bacterial cellulose (BC) with antimicrobial properties by in situ method. We design a series of experiments on hydrolyzing mulberry leaves and exploring the methods of fermenting and purifying to obtain a BC complex with antimicrobial properties. Meanwhile, the anti-bacterial performances of MH-BC (fermented by the mulberry leaves acid hydrolysate fermentation medium) were evaluated with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and the experimental results showed that the MH-BC have excellent anti-bacterial activities. Considering the excellent biocompatibility of MH-BC towards hMSCs, we expect that this antibacterial functional BC composite will find potential applications in biomedicine and regenerative medicine.
