Beyond the Eyeball Test: Measures of Frailty in Lung Transplantation

Health care providers know the “eyeball test” well. It is not something you will find defined in any textbook or taught in any curriculum. Transplant providers know it in terms of evaluating a patient for transplant listing. Based on our interactions in clinic and in rehabilitation, we make an eyeball assessment of fitness fo r transplant. It feels haphazard and poorly defined. In a world where donors are limited and prospective recipients are increasing in age and comorbidity burden, the transplant community needs better tools to make the difficult decision of who to list for transplant.
