How Much Intake of Sodium is Good for Frailty?: The Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS)

AbstractObjectiveThe aim of this study was to determine how sodium intake can affect frailty, but not anorexia, in community-dwelling older adults in Korea.DesignThis was a cross-sectional study.SettingThe study used data from the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Survey (KFACS), a multi-center longitudinal study addressing 10 centers across urban, rural, and suburban communities in Korea, between 2016 and 2017.ParticipantsA total of 954 older adults who underwent both 24-hour dietary recall assessment and physical function test during the first-year baseline investigation of the KFACS.MeasurementsFrailty was determined according to the Fried frailty index (FFI).ResultsOf the 954 participants, 461 (48.3%) were male and the mean age was 76.3 years old. The average daily sodium intake was 3857 mg. The frailty prevalence in first to third quartiles was 21.8%, 7.5%, and 5.4%, respectively, and increased in the fourth quartile of sodium intake to 8.9%. Using the second quartile of sodium intake (2504 –3575 mg) as reference, the odds ratios of frailty were 1.64 (95% confidence interval: 0.84–3.22), 1.33 (0.57–3.06), and 4.00 (1.72–9.27) for the first (

Conclusions. Combining the network analysis approach with the mediation analyses provides for the first time a putative hybrid model, which reveals that all CM types converge towards ED symptoms through emotional abuse and that interoceptive awareness and ineffectiveness mediate these connections in people with ANR and BP symptoms, respectively. These findings may have possible implications for both research and treatment of EDs.

Clinical Pathologic Mismatch in a TNF-α Inhibitor-Associated Drug Reaction J Drugs Dermatol. 2019 Aug 01;18(8):828-830 Authors: O’Brien KF, Maiman RE, DeWitt CA Abstract A 56-year-old Caucasian male with a history of chronic plaque psoriasis, primary sclerosing cholangitis status-post liver transplant on tacrolimus, and ulcerative colitis on infliximab developed a progressive erythematous eruption with associated fatigue, anorexia, myalgias, and arthralgias. On two separate occasions, his skin biopsy demonstrated a lichenoid interface dermatitis (LID). Despite multiple courses of oral predn...

ConclusionsResults indicated some positive correlations between MBPs and outcomes but a definitive conclusion cannot be drawn since these results are on within-condition effects and that half of the included studies did not have a control condition. Results identified moderators that may be useful to refine inclusion and exclusion criteria to target those most likely to benefit from MBPs. The field needs more rigorous studies with credible alternative interventions to confirm the efficacy of MBPs for ED patients.

In this study, we fabricate the Ave-deposited AuNP-collagen nanocarrier (AuNP-Col-Ave) and investigate their endocytic mechanisms in transformed SCC oral cancer cells and non-transformed BAEC and HSF cell lines. By using DLS assay, Ave-deposited AuNP-Col have shown a particle size of 303 ± 35.2 nm. Both UV–vis absorption assay and FTIR spectrum analysis were also demonstrated that the Ave conjugated onto AuNP-Col. Further, both MTT assay and Calcein AM assay were revealed that AuNP-Col-Ave induced a significant cytotoxicity in cancerous SCC cells and showed nontoxicity and biocompatibility for non-transf...

ConclusionsThe efficacy of adding bavituximab to sorafenib for the treatment of advanced HCC was inconclusive; however, the combination regimen did not exacerbate toxicities associated with single-agent identifierNCT01264705.

SummaryPurpose Anorexia induced by cytotoxic chemotherapy on delayed phase is a highly frequent adverse event. We aimed to determine the effects of rikkunshito (RKT) on chemotherapy-induced anorexia (CIA) in patients with lung cancer. Methods This prospective, randomized, cross-over pilot trial included 40 lung cancer patients scheduled to undergo cisplatin-based chemotherapy and randomized to either a group given RKT 7.5  g/day for 14 days (Group A,N = 20) or not (Group B,N = 20), then the treatments were switched. All patients received dexamethasone, palonosetron hydrochloride and apr...

t T Abstract Research in the field of gut microbiota - brain axis may contribute to clarifying the origin of anorexia nervosa and bulimia, the two principal forms of eating disorders (ED). The initial key findings in ED patients of plasma immunoglobulins (Ig) that react with α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a neuropeptide in the brain signaling satiety, have initiated further studies leading to the discovery of the origin of such autoantibodies and to the understanding their possible functional role. An anorexigenic bacterial protein Escherichia coli caseinolytic protease B was recently found ...

en PL Abstract We used a high-level adaptation paradigm to distinguish between two hypotheses: (1) perceptual and attitudinal body image measurements reflect conceptually different mechanisms which are statistically independent of each other; (2) attitudinal (e.g., questionnaire) and perceptual (e.g., visual yes-no) body image tasks represent two different ways of measuring exactly the same construct. Forty women, with no history of eating disorders, carried out the experiment. Each participant carried out five adaptation blocks, with adapting stimuli representing female bodies at: extreme-low body mass index (BMI...
