Gestational diabetes associated with incident diabetes in childhood and youth: a retrospective cohort study.

We examined associations between gestational diabetes mellitus and incidence of childhood- and youth-onset diabetes in offspring. METHODS: Using public health insurance administrative databases from Quebec, Canada, we randomly selected singleton live births with maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (1990-2007) and matched them 1:1 with singleton live births without gestational diabetes mellitus. Follow-up was to Mar. 31, 2012. We examined associations of diabetes in offspring with maternal gestational diabetes mellitus through unadjusted and adjusted Cox proportional hazards models. In secondary analyses, we separately considered age groups ranging from birth to age 12 years, and age 12 to 22 years. RESULTS: Incidence of pediatric diabetes (per 10 000 person-years) was higher in offspring born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (4.52, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.47-4.57) than in mothers without gestational diabetes mellitus (2.4, 95% CI 2.37-2.46). In an adjusted Cox proportional hazards model, maternal gestational diabetes mellitus was associated with development of pediatric diabetes overall (birth to age 22 yr: hazard ratio [HR] 1.77, 95% CI 1.41-2.22), during childhood (birth to age 12 yr: HR 1.43, 95% CI 1.09-1.89), and in youth (age 12 to 22 yr: HR 2.53, 95% CI 1.67-3.85). INTERPRETATION: Gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with incident diabetes in offspring during childhood and adolescence. Future studies are needed to examine longe...

ConclusionElevated MPV could be either the cause for or due to the effect of the vascular complications. Hence, MPV can be used as a simple parameter to assess the vascular events in diabetes.

ConclusionsHuman IGF-1 gene may be a candidate gene for GDM and T2DM risk, as our study suggests a significant association between the IGF-I rs35767 and rs5742612 polymorphisms and the risk of T2DM and GDM in pregnant women, whereas there was no association for rs2288377.

However, these results have not been entirely consistent, and there are no related studies in a Chinese population, suggesting the need for further exploration. Objective The current study investigated the associations of the ABCC8 rs1801261 polymorphism with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) susceptibility and repaglinide therapeutic efficacy in Chinese H...

CONCLUSIONS: Population studies indicate that the prevalence of diabetes has increased and that there are approximately two new cases per 100 people per year. Evidence is still scarce in the jungle and in rural populations. PMID: 31116335 [PubMed - in process]

ConclusionDuring the 3-year follow-up period, mortality and clinical complications in STBAD patients after TEVAR were significantly reduced in the T2DM group. For STBAD patients who undergo TEVAR, properly relaxing of blood glucose control requirements may be beneficial for their prognosis.

AbstractPurpose of ReviewAt the 2019 American College of Cardiology annual scientific sessions, major randomized clinical trials in cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention were presented.Recent FindingsThe CLEAR Wisdom trial examined the safety and efficacy of adding bempedoic acid to maximally tolerated statin for reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Post hoc analyses from the REDUCE-IT trial evaluated the efficacy of icosapent ethyl for lowering risk of total (first time and recurrent) CVD events. A sub-analysis of ODYSSEY OUTCOMES examined the effect of alirocumab on lipoprotein(a) lowering for reducing CVD ris...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewSince the 2008 FDA guidance restructuring the design of trials for the approval of novel glucose-lowering agents, 13 medications have now been evaluated by dedicated cardiovascular outcome trials. All of the completed trials have included data (though with varying definitions) on rates of hospitalization for heart failure. This review is aimed at summarizing current heart failure outcome data available from cardiovascular safety trials for novel glucose-lowering agents in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Recent FindingsThere appears to be growing evidence for the benefit of sodium –gluc...
