Rationale: Pain management is an essential part of good obstetrical care. The rapid onset of pain relief after combined spinal-epidural (CSE) analgesia may cause a transient imbalance in maternal catecholamine level, leading to uterine hyperactivity and fetal heart rate (FHR) abnormalities. How to manage the uterine basal tone and FHR abnormalities after labor analgesia still remains controversial. Patient concerns: A 33-year-old nulliparous woman at 40+5 weeks’ gestation underwent induction of labor after premature rupture of membranes. CSE analgesia was provided when the patient described her pain as the top o...

Conclusions: Magnesium sulfate is an important adjuvant drug in the practice of anesthesia, with several clinical effects and a low incidence of adverse events when used at recommended doses. Introduction Magnesium is the fourth most common ion in the body, and it participates in several cellular processes, including protein synthesis, neuromuscular function and stability of nucleic acid, as well as regulating other electrolytes such as calcium and sodium. Magnesium acts as a cofactor in protein synthesis, neuromuscular function and stability and the function of nucleic acids. It is a component of adenosine 5-triph...

Non-pharmacologic intervention using music or video games has been applied for pain management in pediatrics, palliative care, physical therapy, and surgery. Previous studies pertaining to music in labor are limited. Our objective was to assess whether distraction using music and/or video games improves pain outcomes and assists in analgesia management in women undergoing labor induction.

Authors: Abstract Obstetrician-gynecologists, in collaboration with midwives, nurses, patients, and those who support them in labor, can help women meet their goals for labor and birth by using techniques that are associated with minimal interventions and high rates of patient satisfaction. Many common obstetric practices are of limited or uncertain benefit for low-risk women in spontaneous labor. For women who are in latent labor and are not admitted, a process of shared decision making is recommended. Admission during the latent phase of labor may be necessary for a variety of reasons. A pregnant woman with ter...
