Variation of carbohydrate intake in diabetic children on carbohydrate counting
Nutritional management is one of the key elements in treating type 1 diabetes and education [1]. The International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) recommends that 50 to 55% of the daily energy intake consists of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are therefore the main element in the diet of the diabetic patient. Blood glucose control is defined by a hemoglobinA1c (HbA1c) target of less than 7.5% (58 mmol/mol) according to ISPAD [2]. The recommendations also include the absence of severe or frequent moderate hypoglycemia and pre- and postprandial blood glucose targets.
