Diosgenin ameliorates testicular damage in streptozotocin-diabetic rats through attenuation of apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Int Immunopharmacol. 2019 Feb 19;70:37-46 Authors: Khosravi Z, Sedaghat R, Baluchnejadmojarad T, Roghani M Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent metabolic disorder that is associated with development of some complications in male reproductive system including testicular damage, sexual dysfunction, abnormal spermatogenesis, and infertility. Diosgenin is a natural steroidal saponin with anti-diabetic, anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory effects. This research study was undertaken to explore the protective effect of diosgenin against diabetes-induced testicular damage in the rat. Ten days following streptozotocin (STZ; i.p.), diosgenin was daily administered for 6 weeks (p.o.). Diosgenin administration to diabetic rats significantly improved body weight and lowered serum glucose. In addition, diosgenin-treated diabetic group had a significantly lower level of malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl, greater level of glutathione (GSH), and higher activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in addition to testicular improvement of ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Furthermore, diosgenin significantly improved serum insulin and testosterone level and alleviated testicular markers of inflammation including tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and interleuki...

Authors: Lancellotti P, De Pauw M, Claeys M Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer represent the two main causes of death in industrialised countries. Both share common risk factors (diabetes, obesity, hypertension, diet, smoking, etc.). The associated timing of CVD and cancer onset is thus largely influenced by modifiable risk factors. Advances in cancer treatment have extended the lives of patients with cancer, but for some at the cost of adverse cardiovascular events. The rapidly growing number of patients surviving cancer, often in the setting of advanced age, new or pre-existing CV disease and risk f...

Authors: Lai G, Guo N, Jiang Y, Lai J, Li Y, Lai R Abstract OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the duration of one-lung ventilation (OLV) affects postoperative pulmonary complications after McKeown esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data stored in a database for esophageal cancer was carried out to identify predictors of postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing McKeown esophagectomy at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center between 2010 and 2012. RESULTS: Patients in the OLV ⩾150 minutes group had a higher incidence of postoperative pulmonary complication...

Authors: Liu J, Yang L Abstract Effects of propofol and sevoflurane on blood glucose, hemodynamics, and inflammatory factors of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and gastric cancer (GC) were investigated. One hundred and ten patients with T2DM and GC, treated in The First Affiliated Hospital of Baotou Medical College (Baotou, China) from January 2017 to December 2018, were selected. Sixty patients anesthetized by propofol were included in the propofol group, whereas 50 patients anesthetized by sevoflurane were included in the sevoflurane group. The level of blood glucose, hemodynamic indicators, and inf...

In this study, combining nanobubbles (NBs) and hydrogen water, we investigate the effect and mechanism of hydrogen NB water on copper induced acute toxicity to water fleas (Daphnia magna). The 24-h lethal Cu concentrations at which 50% of the population die were 84 μg/L in hydrogen NB water and 45 μg/L in control water, confirming that hydrogen NB water effectively alleviated acute Cu toxicity in D. magna. The results were consistent with a significant reduction of Cu uptake and decrease of Cu accumulation in D. magna. As confirmed in fluorescence spectrophotometry and high-content screening system analysis, the hydr...

Authors: Wagner N, Kamann S, Oppel E Abstract The design and development of insulin pumps and various glucose sensor systems has an enormous impact on life quality of diabetic patients. Surveillance and therapy of diabetes has improved due to the new diabetic devices, which are affixed to the patients' skin for several days. Since their introduction, irritant and allergic contact dermatitis have been frequently reported. Patients often acquire contact sensitization to isobornyl acrylate, N,N-dimethylacrylamide or formerly to 2‑ethyl-cyanoacrylate. These contact allergens were found in the patch, in the glue to af...

ConclusionDiagnosis and management of pituitary metastases are complex and depend on many factors. Endoscopic surgical resection and debulking alleviates symptoms and provides the definitive diagnosis which has great importance in cases with clinical presentation that does not strongly point to pituitary metastasis to avoid unnecessary radiotherapy and chemotherapy when possible.
