Connective tissue on the wrong road -- When organs start to scar

(University of Erlangen-Nuremberg) The increased deposition of connective tissue is a problem in chronic diseases of many organs such as the lungs (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis), liver (cirrhosis), kidneys (kidney fibrosis), gut (graft versus host disease), and the skin (systemic sclerosis). Up to 40 percent of all deaths in industrial nations are caused by the deposition of connective tissue with subsequent tissue scarring. In spite of this, there are currently very few effective treatments available.

This study is aimed at measuring the thyroxine requirement in hypothyroid patients with UC. Patients and Methods: Among 8,573 patients with thyroid disorders consecutively seen in our referral center from 2010 to 2017, we identified 34 patients with a definite diagnosis of UC. CONCLUSION: Our study shows the diagnostic value of auto antibodies in AIDs. It would be interesting to carry out prospective studies on each pathology separately, in order to fill the classic vagaries of the retrospective study and objectively estimate the prevalence in different AIDs. We examined 2082 sera from patients with 16 different AID compared to 524 sera from geographically-matched healthy controls, for the presence and titres of anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB.
