Median age of the 220 cases since 2015 is 2.5 years (2.5 years in intensive care cases), 94% were hospitalised, 17% (n = 38) in intensive care. Conclusions: EV-D68 circulated widely in Gipuzkoa during 2016 and was associated with severe ARI. In children with severe ARI of unknown etiology, the presence of EV-D68 should be considered.

Recent article in this Journal has referred to respiratory tract infections (RTIs) caused by rhinovirus/enterovirus.1 Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), a member of the enterovirus D species of the family Picornaviridae, is associated with RTIs. Since EV-D68 was first isolated in California from four children with pneumonia and bronchiolitis in 1962,2 it has become a serious public health threat as no vaccine or antiviral drug was effective in preventing this virus. Since that time, EV-D68 infections have been identified only sporadically all around the world.

In conclusion, this is the first study that reports the frequency of RV species in children and adult patients with acute respiratory tract infections; the frequency of RV-A and RV-C species were found to be similar but higher than RV-B species in all age groups. RV-C and RV-A was the highest species seen in children and adult patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The study reported the presence of respiratory viral agents in 28.57 per cent of children with wheezing; RSV and PIV were most common, accounting to 55 per cent of the total cases. Mixed infection was reported in 30 per cent of cases. Seasonal variation in the occurrence of these viruses was also noted.
