Prevalence of bronchial asthma and COPD in Baku

This study presents the results of population-based analysis of prevalence, burden and risk factors of asthma(BA) and COPD in the capital of Azerbaijan Baku as part of the CORE study (Chronic Obstructive REspiratory diseases). Aim:to study the prevalence of BA and COPD as well as risk factors associated with this diseases among the adult residents of Baku who are living there more than 10years.Methods: There are 933 respondents(Caucasians, women-58.3%) were included in this study during the household visits in 2015. There are 5 subjects aged 18-39years old and 5 subjects aged ≥40years old were enrolled from the each randomly selected street. All participants were interviewed by using study questionnaires, underwent weight/height measurement and spirometry with bronchodilator.Results: Prevalence of previously diagnosed BA and COPD by a doctors before the study were 26.8(95%CI 17.4-39.4) and 4.3(95%CI 1.2-11.0) per 1000persons respectively. Prevalence of "wheezing symptoms" during the study period was 123.4(95%CI 103.0-146.2) per 1000persons. Prevalence of COPD diagnosed and confirmed by spirometry during the study was 37.5(95%CI 26.3-51.8) per 1000persons.
