Letter to the editor on “The role of perioperative statin use in the prevention of delirium after total knee replacement under spinal anesthesia”

We read with great interest the manuscript published by Oh et al [1] which intended to determine role of peri-operative statin therapy in reducing incidence of post-operative delirium (POD) after unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) under spinal anaesthesia. The authors found that continuous use of statins, specifically simvastatin and atorvastatin, during the peri-operative period, was associated with a decreased risk of developing POD after TKA under spinal anaesthesia. It was an interesting and novel study to evaluate a pharmacological intervention for prevention of POD after TKA, a complication which adversely affects post-operative rehabilitation thereby causing delay in discharge from hospital as well as slower functional recovery of the patient.
