Innovations in Emergency Assessment and Management of Suicide Risk

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents in the United States, and the frequency of suicide and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) appears to be rising in youth, especially among younger children and girls. Screening for STBs is being implemented in some primary care settings, yet emergency departments (EDs) and other crisis services have not expanded to address the need for comprehensive evaluation, and the number of inpatient beds and intensive aftercare services are scarce.
