Voriconazole exposure and longer duration of voriconazole were found to be significantly associated with increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma. Regular dermatologic surveillance should be considered for the patients taking voriconazole, especially those at high risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma.

650,000 renal, hepatic, and cardiothoracic (heart and/or lung) transplants have been performed in the U.S. since 1988, with UNOS reporting a 20% increase in transplants between 2012 through 2016. The immunosuppression vital to maintaining graft survival comes with a 65-200X greater frequency of SCC compared to the non-transplant population. These SCC exhibit more aggressive behavior, withincreased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of rejection on the incidence and presentation of SCC.

CONCLUSIONS: In recent years, improvements in surgical techniques and immunosuppressive therapies have helped prolong survival of patients who undergo liver transplant. However, this also has led to a rise in the incidence of long-term complications such as de novo malignancy. These patients are more likely to develop de novo malignancy than the general population, for which chronic immunosuppression is identified as a major risk factor.
