Midterm outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy in the elderly
The prevalence of obesity in the older population is increasing [1,2]. Morbid obesity is associated with several co-morbidities including type 2 diabetes (T2D), metabolic syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, certain types of cancers, and numerous others [3,4]. Metabolic syndrome is a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which in turn is associated with morbidity and mortality at any age and particularly in elderly patients [5]. Bariatric surgery is considered the most effective treatment modality for metabolic syndrome and is known to have superior outcomes compared with medical therapy in the general population [6].
