Abstract The World Health Organization 2016 edition assigned anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement-associated renal cell carcinoma (ALK-RCC) as an emerging renal tumor entity. Identifying ALK-RCC is important because ALK inhibitors have been shown to be effective in treatment. Here, we report the case of a 14-year-old young man with ALK-RCC. Computed tomography revealed a well-demarcated 5.3-cm enhancing mass at the upper pole of the left kidney. There was no further history or symptoms of the sickle-cell trait. The patient underwent left radical nephrectomy. Pathologically, the mass was diagnosed as an u...

ConclusionAssessing microscopic segmental renal vein invasion, which has been included in the current staging system recently, is essential to accurately predict the oncological outcome in the era of partial nephrectomy for clinical T1 renal cell carcinoma.

ConclusionSynchronous metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the pancreas and subcutaneous tissue is very rare, and it might occur after primary tumor resection. Patients must undergo lifelong monitoring and follow-up with regular examination so that any possible metastasis can be detected early. The optimal resection strategy should involve adequate resection margins and maximal tissue preservation of the pancreas, because renal cell carcinoma metastasizing to the pancreas and subcutaneous tissue has a good prognosis with long-term survival.

oos Brüne Jung Accumulating evidence suggests that iron homeostasis is disturbed in tumors. We aimed at clarifying the distribution of iron in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Considering the pivotal role of macrophages for iron homeostasis and their association with poor clinical outcome, we investigated the role of macrophage-secreted iron for tumor progression by applying a novel chelation approach. We applied flow cytometry and multiplex-immunohistochemistry to detect iron-dependent markers and analyzed iron distribution with atomic absorption spectrometry in patients diagnosed with RCC. We further analyzed ...

In this study, we first evaluated the expression and prognostic values of sirtuins in multiple cancer cohorts using publicly available TCGA pan-cancer datasets. Pan-cancer survival analysis indicated that 6 out of 7 sirtuin family members were significant associated with prognosis of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (KIRC) patients. SIRT1, SIRT3, SIRT4, and SIRT5 were associated with favorable prognosis of KIRC patients, while SIRT6 and SIRT7 were associated with unfavorable prognosis. The expression levels of SIRT4 and SIRT5 in KIRC tissues were lower than that in normal tissues, while SIRT6 and SIRT7 were higher in KIRC t...

Abstract A 64-year-old man was treated with sunitinib as a first-line therapy for metastatic renal cell carcinoma. He was given oral sunitinib in cycles of 50 mg once daily for 2 weeks followed by a week off. During the 5th week of treatment right upper quadrant pain developed, but this resolved spontaneously during the 6th week (off treatment). However, on the 8th week of treatment, he was admitted to hospital because the acute right upper quadrant pain recurred with nausea, vomiting, and fever. Acute acalculous cholecystitis was then diagnosed by ultrasonography and CT. In addition, his laboratory findings indic...
