Affective and autonomic response to dynamic rhythmic entrainment: Mechanisms of a specific music therapy factor

The objective of this study was to examine specific cardiovascular and affective effects of live music matched with the listener’s heart beat, with the tempo gradually decreased to assess the relaxation effect.Thirty apparently healthy students were randomized to either the experimental (EG) or the control group (CG). After a brief mental stress task, both groups listened to a live music therapy relaxation technique. While a biofeedback device was utilized to enable real-time synchronization of relaxing music to the listener’s pulse in the EG, the tempo in the CG was fixed to 70 beats per minute. Self-ratings of stress and well-being, as well as autonomic measures of cardiovascular reactivity were assessed. The entrained-tempo condition led to a significantly stronger increase in peripheral blood flow (p   .05).We conclude that rhythmic entrainment may promote a psychophysiological relaxation response. The decrease in sympathetic arousal may have led to more favorable affective self-ratings via an interoceptive feedback process, but more research is needed to clarify the direction of effects.

Abstract In contrast to their analgesic properties, excessive use of either opioids or alcohol produces a paradoxical emergence of heightened pain sensitivity to noxious stimuli, termed hyperalgesia, which may promote increased use of opioids or alcohol drinking to manage worsening pain symptoms. Hyperalgesia has traditionally been measured in rodents via reflex-based assays, including the von Frey method. To better model the motivational and affective dimensions of pain in a state of opioid/alcohol dependence and withdrawal, this unit describes the use of a non-reflex-based method for measuring pain avoidance-lik...

Publication date: October 2018Source: Journal of Functional Foods, Volume 49Author(s): F.F. Yan, W.C. Wang, H.W. ChengAbstractThe aim of the study was to assess the effects of dietary supplementation of a Bacillus subtilis based probiotic on broiler bone health. After 43 days, probiotic fed broilers had greater bone mineralization, wall thickness, size, and weight of tibias and femurs compared to the controls. We further found that probiotic fed broilers also had higher serum calcium levels at day 14 and a trend of lower serum c-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen levels, a bone resorption indicator, at day 43. Authors: Dutta A, Sethi N, Choudhary P, Sood J, Panday BC, Chugh PT Abstract OBJECTIVE: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is commonly attributed to opioid analgesics; consequently, perioperative opioid dosage reduction is a common practice. However, inadequate fentanyl analgesia may have adverse implications (sympathetic activation, pain). We conducted this randomized clinical study to analyze whether preinduction fentanyl 3 µg kg-1 administered by different techniques increases incidence of PONV. DESIGN: Randomized-control, prospective, investigator and observer blinded, two-arm, single-center com...

ündüz A Abstract Prepulse modulation (PPM) is an electrophysiological method which enables to assess sensory processing in vivo. Reflex responses may be facilitated or inhibited (prepulse inhibition, PPI) after a weak stimulus. Theoretically, in animal studies, the generator of PPI involves pedunculopontine nucleus which is modulated by various structures, including amygdala. We aimed to investigate whether or not there was a role of limbic structures in the generation of PPM in humans. For this purpose, we studied PPM of the blink reflex (BR) in 10 patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE group...
