Authors: Company-Quiroga J, Alique-García S, Romero-Maté A Abstract Discoid lupus erythematosus is the most disfiguring and common presentation of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Although most patients will respond to lifestyle measures and topical treatment, a non-negligible number of patients will require systemic and physical therapy, either alone or in combination. We performed a review of the available evidence on the discoid lupus erythematosus treatment. Lifestyle measures and topical treatment (corticosteroids and topical calcineurin inhibitors) remain the therapeutic strategies with th...

ConclusionsDespite the commonly held tenet that preoperative corticosteroids can obscure the pathologic diagnosis in PCNSL, this is likely not the case in the majority of patients who receive a short course preoperatively. Obtaining a second stereotactic scan to confirm continued presence of the lesion prior to tissue sampling may also mitigate these concerns.

In this study, we used liquid-chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to screen for 16 steroid hormones in matched blood and blubber samples from free-ranging common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Seven steroid hormones were detected and quantified, including two progestogens, two androgens, and three corticosteroids. Using principal components analysis (PCA), we explored relationships between hormones in both matrices and three physiological states: sexual maturity in males, pregnancy, and acute stress response. Plasma and blubber testosterone and its precursors, 17-hydroxyprogesterone and androstene...

DiscussionGiven the multiorgan system potential adverse side effects of prednisone, proving noninferiority of an alternate regimen would be sufficient to make the alternative compare favorably to standard dose steroids. This is the first ever clinical trial in cardiac sarcoidosis and thus in addition to the listed goals of the trial, we will also establish a multi-center, multinational cardiac sarcoidosis clinical trials network. Such a collaborative infrastructure will enable a new era of high quality data to guide physicians when treating cardiac sarcoidosis patients.

Severe steroid-resistant asthma is clinically important, as patients with this form of the disease do not respond to mainstay corticosteroid therapies. The heterogeneity of this form of asthma and poor understanding of the pathological mechanisms involved hinder the identification of therapeutic targets and the development of more effective therapies. A major limiting factor in the understanding of severe steroid-resistant asthma is the existence of multiple endotypes represented by different immunological and inflammatory phenotypes, particularly in adults. Several clinical and experimental studies have revealed associati...

ConclusionsThe results of this meta-analysis show that LABA/LAMA combinations are consistently more effective than ICS/LABA FDCs for most of the evaluated outcomes. However, differences have also been observed between FDCs belonging to the same class. Across the investigated LABA/LAMA FDCs, glycopyrronium/indacaterol revealed a consistent and robust efficacy profile.

Publication date: Available online 19 October 2019Source: Autoimmunity ReviewsAuthor(s): Jelena Blagojevic, Paul Legendre, Marco Matucci-Cerinic, Luc MouthonAbstractIn systemic sclerosis (SSc), the use of corticosteroids (CS) is controversial due to their association with scleroderma renal crisis (SRC). However, patients with very early and early disease, characterised by main inflammatory component, may benefit from CS therapy. The aim of this review is to discuss pros and cons of CS treatment in SSc, providing current evidence about the use of CS in SSc. Moreover, we discuss also the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms tha...

Authors: Macomb CV, Evans MO, Dockstater JE, Montgomery JR, Beakes DE Abstract Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is defined as "shoulder pain with limited range of motion within 48 hours after vaccine receipt in individuals with no prior history of pain, inflammation, or dysfunction of the affected shoulder before vaccine administration." Corticosteroid injections (CSIs) have been proposed as a reasonable treatment modality for SIRVA, although evidence regarding efficacy is scanty. In this case series, we present two patients diagnosed with SIRVA who received CSI within 5 days of s...
