Transplantation of Abdominal Organs

Transplantation has encompassed many of the greatest recent advances in medicine. Now, all abdominal organs can be transplanted: liver, stomach, intestine, colon, pancreas, although spleen and gallbladder transplantation would not be particularly useful. The ultimate future goal is long-term functioning artificial organs. Transplantation, however, serves as an immediate bridge to that therapy, which is some time away from reality for most organs. Both graft and patient survival have improved dramatically due to advances in surgical technique and experience, immunosuppression and immunologic monitoring, and posttransplant care.
