Getting into Medicine with a 5 in GCSE Maths - University of Sussex

Hi folks. So basically I'm in year 12 and am taking: French, core mathematics, chemistry and biology. I feel like I can get something like: B,B,A,/A*, A* at the end of the course.
My problem is that I want to go into Medicine. But you see, most Uni's want a B (6) in GCSE Maths. I got a 5.
What's the chance that if I just do well in Core Maths (like get a grade B), they would let me in to their course? When you think about it, surely a C/D in Core Maths A Level is a higher level of Maths than someone who just got a 6 at GCSE and didn't continue with Maths at all at A Level?
Other options:
Since I know people have really differing opinions on this whole grade: 4,5 and 6 thing, I have looked at other options. Are these viable?
