Diversity of the midstream urine microbiome in adults with chronic kidney disease

AbstractPurposeTo examine the characteristics of the midstream urine microbiome in adults with stage 3 –5 non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (CKD).MethodsPatients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR]    50% reads) by the generaCorynebacterium (n = 11),Staphylococcus (n = 9),Streptococcus (n = 7),Lactobacillus (n = 7),Gardnerella (n = 7),Prevotella (n = 4),Escherichia_Shigella (n = 3), andEnterobacteriaceae (n = 2); the rest lacked a dominant genus. The samples had high levels of diversity, as measured by the inverse Simpson [7.24 (95% CI 6.76, 7.81)], Chao [558.24 (95% CI 381.70, 879.35)], and Shannon indices [2.60 (95% CI 2.51, 2.69)]. Diversity measures were generally higher in participants with u rgency urinary incontinence and higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). After controlling for demographics and diabetes status, microbiome diversity was significantly associated with estimated eGFR (P

This study investigated the presence of Streptococci, Staphylococci, aerobic gram negative bacteria (AGNB), Candida and bacterial endotoxins in the oral cavities of patients receiving chemo- and/or radiotherapy for cancer.MethodsSamples of oral cavity rinse were collected from 100 patients on cancer treatment and 70 healthy individuals. Demographic and clinical data were recorded. Samples were cultured onto various agar plates for qualitative and quantitative analysis and tested for the presence of endotoxin. Results were analysed using the Mann-Whitney and chi-square tests.ResultsIn cancer patients, S. aureus counts were ...

AbstractLow molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) are considered the standard of care for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) associated with cancer. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and efficacy of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with cancer. We systematically searched Medline for potential randomized-control clinical trials (RCTs) and post-hoc analyses. For each study, data on recurrent VTE, major or clinically relevant non-major bleeding (CRNMB), and major bleeding (MB) were extracted. Initially, a total of 1395 citations were identified. Eight studies met our eligibility criteria...

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the PRECEDE-PROCEED model combined with self-management theory on self-care behaviors in type 2 diabetic patients.MethodsIn this semi-experimental study, 86 typ...

Neurotrophins such as nerve growth factor (NGF) have long been identified as drivers of neurogenesis during development and regeneration, but intriguingly they were also known to be expressed in human tumors where they can stimulate cancer cell growth. Recent findings have un...

CKD is a term used to describe a set of pathologies that structurally and functionally affect the kidney, it is mostly characterized by the progressive loss of kidney function. Current therapeutic approaches are insufficient to avoid the development of this disease, which highlights the necessity of developing new strategies to reve...

Diabetes leads to multiorgan complications that collectively reduce life expectancy. Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are nested within bone marrow (BM) niches whence they can be mobilized to the peripheral circulation. Clinically, this is done for HSC collection and autologous or allogenic transplantation. A great amount of data from basic and clinical studies support that di...
