Mefloquine effectively prevents malaria during pregnancy but is not well tolerated

(Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal)) The antimalarial drug mefloquine is more effective than the currently recommended treatment to prevent malaria infection in pregnant women living in endemic countries of sub-Saharan Africa, but the high frequency of adverse events represents a barrier to its use. These are the conclusions of a meta-analysis performed by ISGlobal -- a centre supported by the 'la Caixa' Foundation -- and published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, a leading journal in systematic reviews on health issues.
