Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Transgender Youth

Purpose: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk differs among men and women, yet remains the number one cause of death for both. There are several modifiable factors that modify risk of CVD including BMI, blood pressure, diabetes, and lipids. Although research is mixed, sex hormones appear to affect CVD risk in cisgender (affirmed gender corresponds with birth sex) people. Transgender individuals take sex hormones to transition to affirmed gender. CVD risk factors may differ in transgender individuals depending on their transition from male-to-female (trans-female) or from female-to-male (trans-male).
