Developing new molecular methods for synthetizing treatments for drug-resistant cancers

(Worcester Polytechnic Institute) With a $1.7 million award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Anita Mattson, a biochemist at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), will develop a new class of catalysts that could make it possible to reliably synthesize organic compounds that hold the promise of treating cancers that have become resistant to commonly used chemotherapy medications. The catalysts may also open the door to a new approach to discovering new drugs for cancer and many other diseases.
