The importance of audiometric monitoring in patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis

CONCLUSIONS: Evaluations of ototoxicity symptoms were not usually reported in the routine care of patients with MDR-TB. Complaints of tinnitus were associated with amikacin and streptomycin use. These results require confirmation in future studies.

Clinical trials of novel tuberculosis (TB) vaccines are expensive, while global resources for TB vaccine development are limited. Therefore, there is a need for robust and predictive preclinical data to support advancement of candidate vaccines into clinical trials. Here, we provide a rationale for using the nonhuman primate as an essential component of these efforts, as well as guidance to the TB community for standardizing experimental design and aligning endpoints to facilitate development of new TB vaccines.

Conclusions: TB‐associated FM shows some specific imaging characteristics, reflecting immune‐mediated fibrotic reaction secondary to TB infection. The insidious progression to mediastinal fibrosis after TB infection poses a challenge to the early diagnosis and results in subsequent respiratory dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension. ConclusionsNational TB data in Saudi Arabia shows that the rate of MDR-TB was similar to the global rate reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is a relatively high rate as compared to Western countries. The proportion of MDR/RR-TB patients tends to be higher in the younger age group, female gender, and in patients with a previous history of TB treatment. Effective strategies for prevention of all multi-drug-resistant TB cases are warranted.

ConclusionsOur study suggests that a decrease in 3GCs in the overall antibiotic use and the continuation of reduction in fluoroquinolone use, could allow reducing carbapenem use, given the well-demonstrated role of 3GCs and fluoroquinolones in the occurrence of ESBL-PE. Thus, antibiotic stewardship programs should target wards with higher 3GC prescription proportions to reduce them.
