A modern blend of yoga, Zen Buddhism, hypnosis and psychology, it ’s huge on the continent and it’s on its way hereMindfulness is the tried-and-tested tool of our times for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, addiction and more, but what if it ’s not your thing? For those too twitchy to sit still and focus on breathing, the ubiquitous mindfulness apps, self-help sheets and courses in schools and workplaces are little more than totems of uselessness. But you wouldn’t have this problem if you lived in France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland o r Portugal, because you’d be doing sophrology instead. It&rs...

Publication date: August 2018 Source:Polymer Degradation and Stability, Volume 154 Author(s): Zong-Min Zhu, Wen-Hui Rao, A-Hui Kang, Wang Liao, Yu-Zhong Wang Herein, expandable graphite (EG) and aluminum hypophosphite (AP) are used to prepare flame-retardant polystyrene (PS) composites. The flame-retardant properties of the PS composites are investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical burning test (UL-94) and cone calorimetry test (CC). With 15 wt% EG or AP incorporated alone, the PS composites show limited improvement in LOI, and fail to pass the UL-94 test. In contrast, with 10 wt% EG and 5 wt% ...

In this study, the RNAs in the gonads of 1.5-year-old Japanese flounders were sequenced using Illumina. The miRNA expression profiles in the mature gonads of males and females were characterized. A total of 277 mature miRNAs were screened in both gonads. Among them, 25 miRNAs were expressed differently in the ovary and testis. Afterward, miR-1388 was selected for its high expression level in the ovary. Gene ontology analysis revealed that the target genes of miR-1388 were highly involved in cell-cell adhesion. Nectin2l, the target of miR-1388, is a Ca-independent cell adhesion molecule that was demonstrated to be testis-bi...

“Put me out of my misery!” I’ve pleaded to anyone within earshot in the throes of a grueling day, a rant from one feeling burnt out. There are days I want to pull my hair out, even the ones that aren’t gray. One night I caught myself grunting, “I hate my life,” while heading out the door at 12 a.m., after an already exhausting day in the OR. No sane person should ever say that. But the world of medicine nowadays is far from sane. After returning home for two hours of sleep, I drag myself to the office with a full patient-load, which is not bad in itself if it weren’t for that unset...

“On a scale of 1-10, how do you feel?” It’s a question that most psychiatrists ask when assessing mood and medication maintenance. The scale is used to monitor feelings of anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. A patient’s response is the main test used for treatment. But if 1 means that a person feels ecstatic, and 10 means they are suicidal, what is a 6 or a 3? What happens if a patient feels like something is wrong, but nothing has happened? Or if they can’t stop crying since their dog died last week? How much of an impact do average issues have? Are they really feeling an 8 or...
