[Perspectives] Fiona Loud: the kidney patients' champion

Fiona Loud was plagued by health problems for years, but it was only after the birth of her daughter in the early 1990s that signs of kidney damage were first identified. “It took a further 7 years before routine screening for another medical problem indicated that there might be something seriously wrong”, she recalls. Loud was eventually diagnosed with kidney cancer and a rare genetic condition called tuberous sclerosis. “I was told that my kidneys were likel y to fail in 10 to 15 years. In the end, it only took 3 years”, she says.
