Changes in patterns of treatment of burned children at the Linkoping Burn Centre, Sweden, 2009 –2014

Management of burns in children in outpatients was introduced in Linkoping National Burn Centre, Sweden, 15 years ago, at the same time as a special team was introduced to manage children ’s pain and sedation during changes of dressing. Apart from reducing the costs of care [1], our aim was to curtail the duration of hospital stay with beneficial effects on the children’s wellbeing by reducing the risk of hospital-acquired infections. Burns in children in Sweden are mainly minor [2], and can be flexibly managed as outpatients, which allows for readmissions for changes of dressings under anaesthesia, or surgical interventions such as excision and skin grafting, or when needed for the wellbeing of the child.
