Salicylic acid promotes nasal mucosa colonization

(University of Veterinary Medicine -- Vienna) An international research team, including scientists from Vetmeduni Vienna, has now shown that this multifaceted compound can also have an unpleasant side effect. Salicylic acid forms complexes with iron and lab tests showed that the iron limitation strongly promotes formation of biofilms by Staphylococcus aureus. This allows the bacteria to survive and persist in our respiratory tract for longer periods of time which eventually trigger life-threatening infections in immunocompromised persons. ConclusionThe microfractionation protocol developed in this study enabled time-efficient screening of many plants species, using a small quantity of sample material. In this study, a gallium-loaded antimicrobial artificial dermal scaffold was successfully prepared by gallium ions and a collagen solution. The characterization results showed a porous structure with pore sizes ranging from 50 to 150 μm and a large porosity value of 97.4%. The enzymatic degradation rate in vitro was 19 and 28% after 12 and 24 h, respectively.
