Bioimpedance Analysis and Acute Kidney Injury

I read with interest the study by Bufarah et  al.1 where they describe the methods for measuring protein catabolism in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and propose that catabolic rate be used to assess nutritional status. The authors report that obesity has been proven to confer a protective effect on mortality in patients with AKI but evidence on this is yet inconclusive.2 The apparent “obesity paradox” observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has recently been attributed to a greater percentage of lean body mass (LBM) per kilogram of body weight.
