Assessing the Impact of Frame Changes on Trend Data from the Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering

This special report examines the impact of changes in the frame of institutions for the Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering (GSS) based on evaluation research conducted during the past several survey cycles. The 2011 Eligibility Screening Survey identified 165 newly eligible, previously unsurveyed institutions with at least one master ' s- or doctorate-granting program in science, engineering, or health. A total of 140 of these institutions were found to be eligible at the end of the 2013 GSS cycle. The analysis found that adding these new institutions had limited impact on overall counts and trends in the GSS. However, compared with previously eligible institutions, newly eligible institutions have larger proportions of computer science and psychology units and fewer in engineering and health. They also have larger proportions of graduate students that are self-supported, enrolled part time, and are women, minorities, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
