The economic burden of severe hypoglycemia: Two sides of the same coin. Comment on G. Veronese and Coll. Costs associated with emergency care and hospitalization for severe hypoglycemia

Severe hypoglycemia is a marker of increased risk of death and a cause of significant clinical discomfort. Drugs with a relative lower risk of hypoglycemia are frequently preferred, when intensifying diabetes therapy, especially in older patients with multiple severe comorbidities, short life expectancy and suboptimal social and familiar support. However, hypoglycemia is an avoidable complication of diabetes therapy.
