Preoperative blood transfusions for sickle cell disease: a Cochrane review summary

‘Sickle cell disease’ (SCD) refers to a group of inherited red blood cell disorders which result from atypical haemoglobin; the commonest genotype results in sickle cell anaemia. The severity of symptoms varies between individuals and can include: severe pain when sickled red blood cells become lodged in blood vessels, pulmonary hypertension, organ damage or premature death (particularly in low income countries with less healthcare resources).
