Clinical Presentation and Care for Patients with Ebola Virus Disease in China Ebola Treatment Unit, Liberia.

Clinical Presentation and Care for Patients with Ebola Virus Disease in China Ebola Treatment Unit, Liberia. Jpn J Infect Dis. 2016 May 9; Authors: Shao X, Ren W, Zhou F Abstract To clear the clinical characteristics of the confirmed Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) patients admitted to China Ebola Treatment Unit (China ETU) from January 2015 to March 2015, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical symptoms, treatments, and epidemiologic features of 5 patients with confirmed EVD, and reviewed literatures. We found that three survived and two died, the intervals from the onset of the symptoms to negative PCR test for Ebola virus in the three survivors were 14~18 days. Direct contact with confirmed patients within 21 days before admission were reported by three. All the patients had fever, fatigue and anorexia. Fever was usually the first symptom, followed by a gastrointestinal phase in which vomiting/nausea (3 cases, 60%), diarrhea (3 cases, 60%), and abdominal pain (4 cases, 80%) were observed. Three patients had joint pain, muscle pain, and conjunctival bleeding (60%, respectively), and 2 patients had headache (40%). We concluded that strict isolation and cutting off the route of transmission should be used for suspected or confirmed EVD patients. The main treatment strategies were supportive care, maintaining volume and electrolyte balance, and prevention of complications. PMID: 27169945 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
