New research from Yale and MIT describes bioreactor to support whole lung regeneration

(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc./Genetic Engineering News) An innovative mechanical system that mimics the ventilation and blood flow in the chest cavity, housed in a specialized, sterile bioreactor, can support the growth of engineered whole lungs at human scale. Researchers designed this biomimetic environment to advance toward clinical application of whole lung regeneration for transplant using a patient's own cells, as described in BioResearch Open Access.

I read with great interest the original article by Oishi and colleagues1 and the corresponding letter to the Editor composed by Katz and colleagues. Oishi and colleagues' work is one of the most recent publications from the Toronto lung transplant laboratories and has to be interpreted as such. Having established a protocol, which can be used to safely perfuse human donor lungs ex  vivo, the research group has consequently taken the next step and applies this platform to treat and improve organs.
