CtxB1 outcompetes CtxB7 in Vibrio cholerae O1, Bangladesh. J Med Microbiol. 2015 Oct 19; Authors: Rashid MU, Rashed SM, Islam T, Johura FT, Watanabe H, Ohnishi M, Alam M Abstract Cholera toxin (CTX) is encoded by CTX prophage lysogenizing Vibrio cholerae causing severely dehydrating diarrhea, cholera. Of the two subunits of CTX (A and B), ctxB has alleles specific for El Tor and classical biotype strains, although 12 different ctxB genotypes (ctxB1-12)have been detected till now. In El Tor biotype strains responsible for endemic cholera in Bangladesh, ctxB1 was replaced recently with ctxB7. In the present study, we provide data showing competition between the ctxB1and ctxB7 and final outcome was replacement of ctxB7 with ctxB1. This is an important observation of possible epidemiological implication considering that the changing ctxB genotypes were found to be associated with cholera differing in the level of severity of the disease.
