Comparison Photo Optical Imaging with Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Clinical Examination in the Assessment of Inflammatory Activity in Proximal Interphalangeal Joints in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. J Rheumatol. 2015 Aug 1; Authors: Amitai I, Werner S, Schicke B, Burmester GR, Minet O, Zabaryło U, Backhaus M, Ohrndorf S Abstract OBJECTIVE: Lightscan is a novel, rapid, low-cost, easily operated and noninvasive imaging technology used to assess inflammatory activity in proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints. The results are calculated automatically. To our knowledge, this is the first comparative study of photo optical imaging (POI), with clinical examination (CE), disease activity score at 28 joints (DAS28)-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and musculoskeletal ultrasonography (US) in healthy subjects and patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: There were 688 PIP joints of both hands examined in 87 subjects (38 RA, 21 OA, 28 healthy) by Lightscan and compared with CE for clinically swollen and tender joints, DAS28-ESR (only RA), and US. RESULTS: With US as reference, POI had a sensitivity of 74% and a specificity of 93%. In the receiver-operating curve (ROC) analysis, the Lightscan showed a higher sensitivity and specificity [area under the curve (AUC) 0.879] for the distinction of healthy subjects versus patients (OA, RA) than US in greyscale (GSUS; AUC 0.797) and power Doppler (PDU...

Rationale: For hip or knee arthroplasty, it is essential to develop a satisfied peripheral nerve block method that will benefit elderly patients or patients who are contraindicated to neuraxial anesthesia. Patients concerns: Patient in Case 1 suffered from the right intertrochanteric fracture, combined with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; Patient in Case 2 suffered from hip osteoarthritis; combined with ankylosing spondylitis; Patient in Case 3 suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, combined with ischemic encephalopathy. Diagnosis: Case 1: Right intertrochanteric fracture, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease....

J Knee Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0038-1625957Coagulation changes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can provide evidence for optimization of timing of perioperative anticoagulation medicine. To evaluate the changes, 50 patients with knee osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis were recruited for the study and underwent thrombelastography tests pre-, 6 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours after TKA surgery and Doppler ultrasound examination 20 to 24 hours after surgery. The results have shown prolonged clotting time (R value) at 6 and 12 hours, while shortened at 24 hours. Similar results have been found in combined clotting and coagula...

The WHO reports that one of the major chronic conditions affecting the elderly worldwide is musculoskeletal disorders that are associated with long-term pain and disability. Considering the healthcare needs of the elderly (i.e. comprehensive, accessible, efficient) and the advantages of ultrasound (US) use (patient-friendly, convenient, cost-effective, and does not require exposure to radiation or magnetic fields), there seems to be a ‘gap’ in the actual clinical practice. In this paper, we aimed to highlight the potential value of US imaging in the management of the elderly with a wide spectrum of musculoskele...

This article discusses the spectrum of ultrasound features of arthritides seen in rheumatoid arthritis and other connective tissue diseases in adults, such as Sjögren syndrome, lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Ultrasound findings in spondyloarthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced diseases are presented. Ultrasound-guided interventions in patients with arthritis are listed, and the advantages and disadvantages of ultrasound are discussed. PMID: 28774458 [PubMed - in process]

This study aimed to compare the diagnostic value of ultrasonography to conventional radiography in detecting osteophytes and erosions in the midfoot joints in patients suffering from inflammatory and non-inflammatory joint disease. Patients with current foot radiographs were included and stratified in two cohorts: inflammatory and non-inflammatory joint disease. The ten midfoot joints of each foot were evaluated by conventional radiography assessing the presence of osteophytes and erosions and by ultrasonography determining the presence of osteophytes, erosions, and joint effusion. Power Doppler activity was scored semi-qu...

Purpose of review: Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent and disabling disease still necessitating research in pathogenic mechanisms, predictors of disease progression and responsive techniques to detect the slow structural changes within a short time frame. In this scenario, imaging modalities are essential. With recent advancements in technology and availability of large longitudinal datasets, tremendous advances are occurring. The present review discusses and summarizes recent original publications in this area. Recent findings: MRI has been the most popular modality used to evaluate the different roles of structural di...
