Reply to “Misleading impact of mitral regurgitation on the evaluation of left ventricular contractile function in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction”

We thank the authors for the interest in our recent review article.1 The points raised by the authors highlight some technical and pathophysiological limitations of left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF) measurement, that is commonly used as a key parameter for evaluation of LV function and timing of mitral valve repair or replacement (MVR), due to its load dependency and its misleading overestimation of LV pump function in the presence of mitral regurgitation (MR). LVEF is calculated as (end-diastolic volume – end-systolic volume)/end-diastolic volume.
