Categorization of Patients with Pulmonary Embolism by Charlson Comorbidity Index
Pulmonary embolism is a cardiovascular life-threatening acute event afflicted by high morbidity and mortality.1-6 While the annual incidence of pulmonary embolism has increased in the past decades, the case fatality of this emergency event decreased in the same time.3,7-9 Mortality caused by pulmonary embolism is strongly and closely related to the patients ’ hemodynamic status and cardiac involvement, including right ventricular dysfunction and/or myocardial injury, as well as the patients’ comorbidity profile.
