Re-irradiation versus systemic therapy for the management of local-regionally recurrent head and neck cancer

Despite advances in the multi-disciplinary management of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, a significant proportion of patients still experience local –regional recurrence after radiation therapy. For patients who are not candidates for salvage surgery, re-irradiation has long been suggested to improve outcomes [1–3]. However, the evidence in favor of re-irradiation is based almost entirely on single-arm studies, most of which have established relatively modest rates of local control [4–6].
