Associations Between Gender Identity, Depression, And Pain Processing in Cisgender and Transgender Individuals

Existing literature has primarily focused on sex differences in pain perception in pain-free populations. However, no studies have used experimental pain testing in cisgender and transgender individuals to assess gender differences in pain processing. Transgender individuals are disproportionately affected by mental-health disparities, which may further impact their response to painful stimuli. The purpose of this study is to examine whether gender differences exist in quantitative sensory testing (QST) across cisgender men (CM), cisgender women (CW), transgender men (TM), and transgender women (TW).
