The Mediating Role of Future Self Perceptions on the Effects of Psychological Pain Treatments: A Secondary Analysis

A person ’s perception of their future self is hypothesized to influence current psychological function and behavior by a number of theoretical models. It is possible that treatment-related changes in future self perceptions might explain improved pain outcomes. To test this possibility, we conducted a sec ondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial comparing cognitive therapy, behavioral activation, and mindfulness meditation to evaluate whether pre- to post-treatment increases in future self perceptions regarding (1) health and fitness and (2) overall wellness account for pre- to post-t reatment improvement in pain interference, pain intensity, and depression.
